Amid rising cases of Coronavirus around the world, the UK government has decided to inoculate its older population with a third booster jab. The decision comes as the winter season is approaching and the COVID-19 cases are continuously rising. However, the government has decided to provide full protection to its vulnerable population.
The UK to Vaccinate its Vulnerable Population with a Third Booster Jab
The government of the United Kingdom has decided to inoculate its vulnerable population with a third booster jab. Anyone who is 50 or above and has received both doses of the vaccine can get vaccinated with a third jab. The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization (JCVI) recommended the third jab for all those people who are extremely vulnerable to the virus.
Moreover, the main aim behind providing the third jab is to make sure that the citizens of the country are safe and protected. Besides that, the protection lasts for a long time. As the country is heading towards cold months, it is quite important for the people to stay safe. Henceforth, a third jab will help in maintaining safety.
Are We Going to Need a Covid Vaccine Every Six Months?
While recommending the third booster jab, Prof. Lim from JCVI said that the third jab after two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine ensures better protection. Besides that, it doesn’t imply that one will need to get themselves vaccinated every 6 months. The advice today has nothing to do with future inoculations. At the present moment, experts feel that individuals need a third jab so as to prolong the effects of the vaccine. But they have no data or information on whether people will need to get inoculated every six months. However, for now, all that the experts know is that a third vaccine offers better protection against Coronavirus.
The WHO Expresses Concerns Over a Third Booster Jab
Several countries besides the UK have given a green signal to a third booster jab. The country joins Israel, France, Germany, and the Netherlands in administering the third jab. On the other hand, the WHO has time and again expressed concerns over a third vaccine.
In a statement, the global health body said that we are living in a world where several countries are inoculating their citizens with a third jab, while poorer nations are longing for even one. The WHO chief has asked the rich nations to drop their plans for a third jab and help citizens of the poor countries get vaccinated against the deadly disease. Moreover, they also doubt the need for a third jab. The WHO scientists have always mentioned that two doses of a Covid vaccine are enough to offer protection against the virus.
