UK PM Boris Johnson Decides to Donate 100 Million COVID-19 Vaccine Doses
Boris Johnson on Friday declared that he will donate 100 million COVID-19 vaccines. The vaccination drive in the UK is successfully going on. And now, they have enough doses to donate to other needy countries. He made this announcement ahead of the G-7 summit that is hosted in the UK this time. Johnson also called upon the other fellow G-7 countries earlier this week. The other G-7 countries are as follows:
- The United States
- Canada
- France
- Italy
- Germany
- And Japan
UK PM will Donate 80 Million Doses Through COVAX
Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that the UK will donate 5 million doses before September. And before 2021 ends, the country will donate 25 million COVID-19 vaccines. Moreover, they will complete the 100 million targets in 2022. Johnson mentioned that he will donate 80 million doses through COVAX, the WHO initiated COVID-19 vaccine sharing program. However, he will share the rest 20 million bilaterally with the needy countries. On the other hand, US President Joe Biden has also decided to donate 500 million COVID-19 vaccine doses. He will purchase 500 million doses from Pfizer Inc. Currently, Biden is in the UK for the G-7 summit. He is planning to donate the vaccines to 92 low- and middle-income countries.
At the G-7 summit, the world leaders have decided to donate at least 1 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses. Each and every country will do the needful. So far, Biden and Boris Johnson have made the announcement. This is the first in-person G-7 summit after the COVID-19 pandemic.
