Experts in India have warned against a third Covid wave approaching the country this August. India might witness a surge in COVID-19 cases in August as deadly as the second wave that hit the country early this year. The approaching wave might initiate in August and reach its peak in October.
Experts Predict a Third Covid Wave in India in August this Year
According to experts, a third Covid wave is approaching India this August. India might witness a surge in daily infections in August and reach its height in October. The country shall witness not less than 100,000 cases a day in the best-case scenario. On the other hand, it might witness as nearly as 150,000 cases in the worst-case scenario. Experts from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and Hyderabad have stated that the surge in cases will lead the country to a fresh new wave. However, we can already see some states in India like Kerala and Maharashtra witnessing a spike in their daily infections.
A Similar Wave was Predicted in May-June as Well
Even before the third Covid wave, the IIT experts predicted a wave in May based on their model. Vidyasagar, a professor at IIT Hyderabad, predicted that India will hit at least 20,000 cases a day in June. He predicted the surge based on his mathematical model. In April, the prediction was proven incorrect. However, professor Vidyasagar said that it was incorrect because the pandemic was changing rapidly.
What are the Possibilities of a Third Covid Wave?
Experts suggest that the third Covid wave will arrive due to the COVID-19 Delta variant and Delta Plus variant. These two variants are responsible for the surge in infections in the country. Likewise, several other countries across the world are also seeing a surge in their daily infections due to the Delta variant. However, it is said that the COVID-19 vaccinations can cut off the Delta variant and provide immunity to the recipients. Besides that, a few days ago, it was proven the Delta variant might spread as easily as chickenpox in the upcoming days.
Upcoming Wave Most Likely to Affect Children
A few months earlier, the Ministry of Health predicted; that the third Covid wave is likely to affect children more. Although there is no evidence to prove this statement, we need to stay cautious. The Indian scientists from AIIMS are developing COVID-19 vaccines for children in order to immunize them. Most probably, the vaccines will roll out in September this year.
