The Orville has had quite a run over its two-season runtime. The first season couldn’t gather much momentum. That can’t be said about the second season though, as we saw much better character development, plot ideas, and surprisingly, a lot of heart! Fans are desperate to find out about the fate of The Orville Season 3. Is it ready for take-off or is it still under maintenance?
From Seth McFarlane, creator of Family Guy, The Orville is a science-fiction comedy with obvious homage to Star Trek. The show follows the crew of the starship USS Orville and their daily adventures, or misadventures. The first season couldn’t gather many audiences and received lackluster reviews. However, the show improved upon its next season and cemented itself as a unique character-driven comedy.

The Orville Season 3: Release Date
The answer is Yes. The Orville Season 3 is indeed happening. We will also see the show move from Fox to Hulu. Since Disney owns both of them, there isn’t much difference on the top.
The Orville Season 3 is also going to have fewer and longer episodes than Season 2.

Hulu made a tweet on July 21, 2019, that confirmed The Orville Season 3.
In 2019, In a statement for TV Line, McFarlane announced that The Orville Season 3 would be delayed for a while and that he would not be able to deliver episodes until 2020.
McFarlane said, “As the show has evolved and become more ambitious production-wise, I determined that I would not be able to deliver episodes until 2020, which would be challenging for the network. So we began to discuss how best to support the third season in a way that worked for the show. It’s exactly this kind of willingness to accommodate a show’s creative needs that are made me want to stick around for so long.”
This was also the time McFarlane left Fox after 21 years. He moved to NBC for a $200 Million deal.
However, the production shut down due to the Coronavirus pandemic on March 15, 2020. The global situation didn’t stop McFarlane though.
“We shot about half of the season and it’s looking amazing,” MacFarlane said. He also said that he has set up all the systems at his home where he can edit the shows as well as record his other projects, Family Guy and American Dad from home.
Even though we might not see a 2020 release, we may still be getting the next season in early or mid-2021.
Who will be back?
As the captain of The Orville and the show, McFarlane will return as Captain Ed Mercer.
In Season 2, Halston Sage, who appeared as Lieutenant Alara Kitan bid farewell to us as her character decides to stay behind in her hometown. However, executive producer David Goodman has said that he would love to bring her back and would look for ways to incorporate her character.
Anne Winters of 13 Reasons Why fame also confirmed her addition in the next season.

The Orville Season 3: Plot details
Little is known about the plot details of The Orville Season 3. The Orville has mostly had stand-alone episodes and Season 2 had the first two-part episode series. Speaking on the episodes ‘Identity’ and ‘Identity Part 2’, executive producer David A. Goodman said that he would love to explore the repercussions of Isaac’s decision in the next season.
In a reply to one of his fan, McFarlane tweeted that The Orville Season 3 will “up the stakes”.
