The European Medicine Agency (EMA) on Friday approved the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for children between 12 to 17 years. Besides Moderna, Pfizer’s Covid vaccine is also available for children. Several countries across the world are inoculating their young population. However, it is a very step in achieving herd immunity.
Amid Rising COVID-19 Cases, the European Medicine Agency Approves Moderna Jab for Kids
The European Medicine Agency on Friday approved Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine for children aged between 12 to 17 years. However, the vaccine was tested on over 3,700 children and it showed good results. It was quite similar in comparison to the antibody response in young adults aged between 18 to 25 years. The spikevax vaccine seemed to work pretty well on the children of this age group. Moreover, the EU Drug regulator will start rolling out the vaccine for kids very soon.
How was the Trial Conducted?
The trials involved around 3,732 children from the 12 to 17 age group. Out of these 3,732 children, 2,163 received the Moderna COVID-19 jab. And the rest 1,073 children were inoculated with a placebo. As a result, none of the 2,163 children got infected with COVID-19 after receiving the shots. Henceforth, the European Medicine Agency was quite impressed with the results. They allowed the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) to accomplish that the vaccine is quite efficient for the children. Besides that, it shows quite similar results in children between 12 to 17 years as that in young adults.
What are the Vaccine’s Side Effects According to the European Medicine Agency
The European Medicine Agency also stated that the vaccine showed some common side effects in children. Just like the adults have a few side effects, similarly, the children have them too. Some of the common side effects are as follows:
- Swelling at the injection site
- body ache
These symptoms can vary from mild to moderate and improve a few days after vaccination. In case the child gets severe symptoms, parents must consider meeting a doctor as soon as possible.
Vaccinating Children Against COVID-19 is the Need of the Time
Experts have pointed out the necessity of vaccinating children and teenagers against COVID-19. Most of the world’s population is young and in order to achieve herd immunity; they must vaccinate them as early as possible. However, several nations across the world have already started vaccinating their young population. For example, the United States, Canada, Germany, China, etc. The European Medicine Agency also expressed its concern over children’s vaccination.
