On Tuesday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided various premises linked to Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik. Shiv Sena had a strong reaction to the raids and called it a part of BJP’s political vendetta.
Sarnaik had moved a privilege motion in Maharashtra assembly against Republic TV’s Arnab Goswami. He also wrote a letter seeking reopening of the investigation into the suicide of Anvay Naik. Moreover, Sarnaik has also sought a unanimous resolution in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for action against Kangana Ranaut. He filed a motion against the actor for maligning the image of Maharashtra and Mumbai through her tweets.
Thus, Shiv Sena has alleged that the raids on Sarnaik’s properties are a case of “political vendetta”. Shiv Sena has said that the actions were taken against the Maharashtra government for their assertiveness against Republic TV and their editor-in-chief, Arnab Goswami, as stated in PTI.
The Enforcement Directorate investigates financial crimes of the country. The ED raided ten different premises linked to the Shiv Sena MLA with an alleged case of money laundering. The locations were in Mumbai and neighboring Thane.
Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut told reporters that the Maharashtra government or its leaders will not surrender to pressure from anyone. He added that Sarnaik met him after the raids and told him that the ED conducted the raid unbeknownst to him. Raut didn’t take any names and said that the Maharashtra government will never “surrender to any kind of pressure”. He asserted that the actions of ED were motivated politically.
“This is a political vendetta”: Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut
He said reporters that Sarnaik has taken a firm stand in connection with “a channel” and the Anvay Naik suicide case.“Hence, such suppressive action…This is a political vendetta. The ED or other agencies should not work as a branch of a political party,” said Raut referring to Republic TV.
Moreover, Raut said, “Be it the Central Bureau of Investigation or the ED, our government, MLAs, and leaders will not surrender to anyone no matter what. We will keep fighting.” Raut said that the Shiv Sena won’t care if the central agencies and judiciary are going to behave as “slaves or servants” of those in power. He asserted that the Shiv Sena won’t be scared if the ED sets up its office outside their homes. This includes each of Shiv Sena’s MLAs, MPs, and leaders.
“No matter how many notices you send, raids you conduct, create fake documents and evidence, but in Maharashtra and the case of the Maha Vikas Aghadi, only truth shall prevail,” he said.
Additionally, he claimed that the motto of ‘Satyamev Jayate” can only win in Maharashtra.
Raut also claimed that taking actions based on evidence is one thing. He added, “But, you want to mentally harass the people related to the [state] government. These actions will backfire on you. And I think that time is nearing.”
The ED investigation also provoked strong reactions from NCP chief Sharad Pawar and Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.
