After its final episode aired in 2017, BBC has still not announced anything about Sherlock Season 5. This has created doubts in fan’s minds, some of whom believe that there will be no new season.
BBC’s Sherlock is one of the most highly regarded adaptations of the Arthur Conan Doyle classic. The show is set in present-day London with the characters and stories adapted from the books. Sherlock has received huge praise for its setting, usage of the material, and the chemistry between the two leads.
Has Sherlock come to an end?
The show has been at a rest for a while and die-hard fans are waiting for any new development. The two leads, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, since then have become huge since the show first aired. Both of them have seen success with different shows and movies. Cumberbatch is also famous for his portrayal of Dr. Strange in the MCU and many highly regarded movies such as 12 Years A Slave and 1917. Freeman also appears in the MCU as Everett K. Ross as well as acclaimed shows such as Fargo.
Martin Freeman in a recent interview said, “Not only me, but Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Gatiss, and Steven Moffat are super busy, and that’s the reason they do not want to run the risk of running the show’s legacy by producing a subpar season.”.
Co-showrunner Moffat has also mentioned that he hasn’t thought about it. Mark [Gatiss, co-showrunner]’s is also doing other stuff so there wasn’t any chance to sit down and have a proper talk about what they would do with Sherlock Season 5.
It is safe to assume that the fifth season will be happening. It may not be soon due to the cast and crew’s extremely tight schedule and the ongoing CoVID-19 pandemic, but it is certainly happening.
Who will be back in Sherlock Season 5?
Fans are dying to see their favorite mismatch duo Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman return as Sherlock and Watson. There is no news as of now but it can be safely assumed that both Cumberbatch and Freeman will be back for the fifth season.
In Season 4, we are also introduced to Sherlock’s long-lost sister Eurus Holmes, played by Sian Brooke. Brooke has stated that she was intrigued by the character and would love to be back.
Mark Gatiss is also expected to return as Mycroft Holmes in Sherlock Season 5. Other regular cast members include Rupert Graves, Louise Brealey, Una Stubbs.
One of the best surprises of Season 4 was the triumphant return of Andrew Scott as Moriarty. Scott has also gained popularity after leaving the show and has garnered appreciation from the fans. He was also seen in movies such as Spectre, 1917, and shows such as Fleabag. Whether he will come back again or not is a mystery but he will always be welcomed.
The Plot of Sherlock Season 5
So what is Sherlock Season 5 going to be about? Creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have said that they are looking into original stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle for further inspiration.
The show ended with Sherlock’s sister Eurus Holmes back in her confinement. Fans believe that more of her story will be explored in the next season, although it hasn’t been confirmed yet.
Gatiss has also said that he and Moffat are interested in a particular story called “Red-Headed League” for Sherlock Season 5. This story involves Andrew Scott’s Moriarty and a bank robbery.
Actress Eleanor Matsuura was also seen in the first episode of the fourth season, ‘The Six Thatchers’ as Detective Inspector Stella Hopkins. She was seen for a short time and it is speculated that she will be heavily involved in the latest season.
