Russia on Wednesday witnessed its highest COVID-19 death toll with over 900 casualties for the first time since the outbreak. The country is currently dealing with an upsurge in COVID-19 cases, with the government implementing strict restrictions in Moscow. However, the fifth worst-hit COVID-19 cases had managed to contain the virus but it seems as if things are worsening again.
Russia Records its Highest-Ever Death Toll
Amid rising COVID-19 cases in the country, Russia on Wednesday recorded its highest-ever casualties with the death toll standing at 929. So far, the country has recorded over 7.5 million COVID-19 infections and thousands of deaths. But never did the casualties reach this high. However, the world’s fifth worst-hit COVID-19 country is witnessing an upsurge in its daily infections since August 2021. With the COVID-19 Delta variant dominating the surge, the country is also facing a very lethargic vaccination drive.
Difficulty in Vaccine Distribution
Although Russia has successfully developed several safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines; the government is struggling with its distribution. The authorities are continuously encouraging the public for inoculation; only to end their day in failure. However, some reports suggest that half of the Russian population is not interested in getting a Covid vaccine shot. As a result, the cases in the country are recklessly rising, forcing the government to implement strict restrictions in several regions including Moscow.
Inactive Vaccinations in the Country
So far, only 30 percent of Russians are fully vaccinated. As mentioned above, half of the country’s population is not interested in getting a Covid shot. Henceforth, the authorities in Russia are struggling; to encourage the citizens to receive their respective jabs. The country’s total population is about 146 million and just a mere 30 percent of the population has received the vaccines. Deputy Prime Minister Tayana Golikova stated earlier this week that death rates were high among the unvaccinated population of the country.
COVID-19 Situation in Russia
Addressing the situation, a government spokesperson said; that lockdowns are the last option for them. It is absolutely an undesirable situation in any region of Russia. However, the authorities have implemented some strict restrictions in Moscow but they are not planning to implement a nationwide lockdown.
