However, this is just the beginning of a hard period that the country is going to witness in the upcoming days. The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization has warned the country beforehand about the upcoming shortage. It is expected that the nation will face a shortage of around 860,000 tons this year.
How did this Food Crisis Occur in North Korea?
According to the FAO report, North Korea will produce 5.6 million tons of grain this year. This, however, is 1.1 million tons short of the amount required to feed its entire population. It is indeed a worrisome situation for the entire country. The country shut its borders with other nations in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Besides that, its own agricultural sector failed due to floods. All these scenarios led to the country’s current situation. Moreover, North Koreans have started reducing their diet as well. They are eating 445 calories a day than the 2100 calorie diet.

North Korean dictator, Kim Jong-Un addressed the food shortage issue in June. He is quite concerned about the arising situation that is now getting tense. According to reports, rice prices have already sky-rocketed in the country. Besides that, the price of coffee has already gone up to $100. Moreover, corn prices are also rising continuously in the country. North Korea also witnessed a 5.2 percent decline in grain production in 2020.
