However, the island nation was doing quite well at the beginning of the pandemic. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern sealed all borders and implemented strict restrictions in order to keep the country Covid free. But things always don’t go as planned. After remaining Covid free for approximately two months, the island nation is now witnessing a surge in its daily infections.

New Zealand reported 94 new cases on Tuesday, the highest-ever count since the outbreak. However, the country reported 89 COVID-19 cases in the initial days of the pandemic, but that was 18 months ago. The island nation was successful in eradicating the virus and remaining Covid free for several months. Auckland is reporting the maximum number of cases. On the other hand, Waikato also reported seven cases on Tuesday. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has called the situation worrisome and asked the people to get themselves vaccinated as soon as possible.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said in an interview that this time the virus is targeting younger people. She further added that the highs and lows of the COVID-19 cases in getting hard on the people of New Zealand. Moreover, she emphasized the fact that they are not powerless. The citizens of the country have the ability to keep the cases as low as they can. However, the country has previously eradicated the virus and has the potential to do that again. Besides that, she asked the people to focus on vaccinations.
COVID-19 Vaccinations in New Zealand
New Zealand saw a spike in its vaccination status on Saturday. More than 130,000 people got themselves vaccinated against Coronavirus. However, Ardern has also promised the citizens; to ease the restrictions in Auckland ahead of vaccinations. So far, 67 percent of the country’s total population is fully vaccinated. There is still a long way to go. Hopefully, the country will eradicate the virus soon and come back stronger.
