Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, on Monday, admitted that the country’s “Zero Covid” accomplishment is now shattered. After remaining Covid free for months, the island nation started seeing a surge in infections in August this year. However, the government tried really hard to curb the spread but failed vigorously. The Prime Minister has called the current strategy ineffective and is bound to implement new measures in the country. Moreover, it was one of the few countries of the world that had possibly remained Covid free for months.
New Zealand might Never Go Back to “Zero Covid” Situation
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern called for a new COVID-19 strategy in New Zealand. The Prime Minister admitted on Monday, that the country’s widely praised “Zero Covid” tag has failed to a stubborn outbreak due to the Delta variant.
Moreover, the government tried its best to control the recent outbreak that began in August this year. After remaining Covid free for months, the island nation is now witnessing a sudden surge in daily infections. The outbreak which began in Auckland is impacting other regions as well. However, Jacinda Ardern has stated that she will implement new measures in the country to contain the virus.
Strict Restrictions have Saved the Country
It is the strict restrictions that helped New Zealand remain Covid free for months. The country had successfully managed its COVID-19 condition better than any other country since the pandemic started. Moreover, the harsh elimination policy had largely saved the island nation from the effects of the deadly virus. Besides that, the citizens were enjoying a normal domestic life due to restrictions on international travel. Soon after the government loosened its restrictions, the aftermaths were unimaginable. Henceforth, the sudden outbreak in August resulted in a seven-week lockdown in several parts of the country, including Auckland.
A Game Changer
Jacinda Ardern said that the deadly Delta variant is a “game-changer”. We are not even denying her statement. The condition of New Zealand is a living example that how transmissible and infectious the COVID-19 Delta variant is. Just when the government thought that they are all buckled up and prepared against the virus, the tables turned.
Moreover, the Prime Minister emphasized the fact that despite all the tough restrictions, they are still not able to reach zero. Besides that, she is very doubtful about the whole situation. We can’t really say whether the country will once again get back to the “Zero Covid” situation or not. However, the government is planning to loosen some restrictions in Auckland, even though there is no decline in the daily cases. They will also focus on vaccinations in order to keep the virus at bay.
