New IT Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw has picked it up from where his predecessor, Ravi Shankar Prasad left. He has warned Twitter saying that “the law of the land is supreme”. Under any circumstances, Twitter will have to comply with the new rules or it will have to face extreme consequences.

New IT Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw has warned Twitter saying that, “the law of the land is supreme”. The warning comes amidst a cold war ongoing between the Indian government and Twitter over the new IT rules. However, the government had warned Twitter several times; to make changes in its policy and make it more accountable for third-party content. Experts suggest that Twitter has lost legal protection with respect to claims against user-generated content.
Delhi High Court Justice Calls Twitter’s Behavior Intolerable
Twitter has asked for a period of eight weeks from the Delhi High Court in order to appoint an Indian grievance officer. However, Twitter is weeks past the deadline the Indian government had offered to appoint an Indian grievance officer. According to the new rules, it was necessary for the social media company to hire an Indian grievance officer. Rekha Palli, Justice, Delhi High Court, said that Twitter’s behavior is highly unprofessional. It will have to stick to the government’s deadline. Moreover, the new IT Minister also agrees with Justice’s statements.
Recently Appointed Twitter Officer Resigns from his Position
A few days ago, Twitter appointed Dharmendra Chatur as its grievance officer. But he stepped down leaving Twitter in violation of new IT rules. Previous IT Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad had criticized Twitter several times. However, the company paid the least attention and did what it wanted to. Even Twitter temporarily blocked his official account. But new IT minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw is not at all going to tolerate this behavior. Henceforth, he wants the platform as transparent as other social media platforms.
