Microsoft claims that approximately 70 percent of Indians have fallen prey to tech-support scams in the last 12 months in India. The company announced in a report on Thursday that India ranks number 1 in tech-support scams.
India Ranks at Number 1 in Tech-Support Scams: Microsoft
According to a Microsoft survey, about 70 people in India encountered tech-support scams in the last 12 months. Besides that, India ranked number 1 in such scams among 16 countries. The company revealed this news in its report on Thursday. Similarly, in 2018, something of the same sort happened in a survey. However, the company also claims that the number of exposed customers to such scams in India has declined in comparison to 2018’s data.
When did the Company Conduct the Research?
Microsoft released the Global Tech Support Scam Research 2021 on Thursday. This data was also revealed in the same report. However, the company commissioned a market research firm called YouGov to conduct this research. YouGov conducted this survey in India between May 6 and May 17 across 16 different countries. It involved more than 16,000 adult internet users across these countries. Henceforth, the market research firm classified the internet users on the basis of their age, gender, and region to prepare the data.
How many People Actually Got Involved in Such Scams in India?
India is a hub of tech-support scams. The country has seen a massive increase in telephonic tech-support scams since the year 2018. When Microsoft conducted the research in 2018, telephonic scams were at 23 percent in India. But they have increased to 31 percent in the recent survey. Besides telephonic scams, email scams are also quite common in the country. Moreover, pop-up advertisements and redirection to websites are also involved in this category.
Several People Got Tricked and Lost their Money
According to the survey, 31 percent of people responded to these tech-support scams; and lost money. In 2018, it was 14 percent. However, people who got tricked but didn’t lose money; account for 48 percent in this year’s survey. But, in the 2018 Microsoft survey, they accounted for 40 percent. On the other hand, the global percentage accounts for 16 percent. These tech-support scams are getting quite popular these days. People need to remain careful and vigilant.
Indians Fall Prey Because they Trust Blindly: Microsoft
Microsoft said that Indians fall prey to such scams easily; because they blind trust everyone. They believe that any random company will contact them first and they initiate further contact with them. As a result, they fall prey to such scams. However, 88 percent of people recovered their lost money after getting tricked. This is positive news. In the last 12 months, 3 out of 5 people have faced a tech-support scam in India.
