New Zealand is hands down one of the least-affected COVID-19 countries in the world. However, recently the country started reporting cases after remaining Covid free for almost 2-3 months. Prime Minister Jacinda Arden immediately implemented lockdowns and curfews across the country to curb the virus spread. Currently, the situation is under control; but the authorities are quite skeptical about loosening the restrictions.
COVID-19 Lockdown in New Zealand
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern stated that she will curb the curfews in New Zealand only; when there is an increase in the country’s vaccination rates. As we said earlier, the island nation is one of the least affected COVID-19 countries in the world. When the virus started spreading all around, the country sealed all its borders and implemented strict restrictions in order to hush the virus away.
However, it definitely succeeded in its mission. But recently the country started recording new infections; that led to an uncertain nationwide lockdown. Although the situation is stable now; the authorities have one condition before they curb the restrictions. PM Jacinda Ardern has stated that she will loosen the restrictions only; if 90 percent of the country’s total population is vaccinated against COVID-19.
Auckland Under Level 3 Lockdown
So far, New Zealand has reported 4,135 COVID-19 infections with 27 deaths. However, approximately 3,819 people have also recovered from the virus. The active cases toll in the country stands at 289. On Wednesday, the country reported 15 new infections, all from Auckland. Moreover, Ardern’s government has a four-tier system of COVID-19 protocols; in which Auckland is now in level 3 lockdown. The rules in level 3 are strict but not that much. In a level 3 lockdown, restaurants and other outlets are allowed to open but with contactless collection. People are advised to stay at home and work from home. Meanwhile, all grocery stores and supermarkets are also allowed to remain open. Besides that, pharmacies, banks, and petrol stations can also operate.
What did the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, Say?
In an interview on Thursday, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern; stated that the only way to end this lockdown is to push vaccinations. The government is considering vaccination as the main tool against the virus. However, the country’s vaccinations are extremely low; and they have to come up with an idea to boost them up.
She added that high vaccination rates will give more freedom to the citizens of New Zealand. At present, only 40 percent of the country’s total adult population is fully vaccinated. Besides that, 75 percent population has received at least one dose. There are over 1.2 million eligible people in the country; who are yet to receive even a single dose of the Covid vaccine.
