Japan is considering expanding its COVID-19 restrictions in eight more prefectures, taking the total count to 21 amid rising COVID-19 cases in the country. The hospitals are overwhelmed with patients and the cases are rising every day. Although the country managed to host Tokyo Olympics 2020, it resulted in an outburst of cases. Several other countries of the world are facing a surge in COVID-19 cases lately.
Japan Set to Expand COVID-19 Restrictions in the Country
Amid rising COVID-19 cases in the country, Japan is planning to expand restrictions in eight more prefectures. However, almost half of the country’s prefectures are under lockdown due to the sudden surge in COVID-19 cases. A panel of experts came to this conclusion. So far, the government has not approved this decision formally. But it is believed that they will approve it sooner or later this week.
An Extremely Worrisome Situation
The situation in Japan is extremely worrisome. As the Delta variant continues to spread in the country, companies are refraining their employees from working at home. Moreover, they are encouraging them to return to their respective offices. Besides that, the sudden surge of cases in the country has created panic among the government. The country reported 21, 570 new infections on Tuesday and 42 casualties. However, their fatality rate stands at 1.2 percent as compared to the United States (1.7 percent) and Britain (2.0 percent).
Health System is Collapsing
There is a shortage of beds in hospitals in Japan. Almost 90 percent of the country’s critical care beds are occupied. Besides that, some people do not even get the privilege of a hospital bed. They lose their lives even before getting proper treatment. In a nutshell, the country’s health system is collapsing. The government is trying its best to add more health facilities across several prefectures.
However, the latest state-of-emergency extension will add Hokkaido, Aichi, Hiroshima, and five other prefectures. As a matter of fact, the country has very loose lockdown restrictions. If we compare it to the restrictions implemented in other countries, it is quite lenient. Henceforth, this is another reason why cases in the country are continuously rising.
