It led to a fourth COVID-19 wave in the country. The authorities are already shaken due to the rising number of infections. Moreover, vaccination drive in the country is also slow. In these situations; the Olympics are a big threat.
COVID-19 Negative Report Required for Japan Olympics
Japan has mandated a COVID-19 negative report; for all the Olympic participants. Besides that, fans are also requested to carry a negative report at the Tokyo Olympics. However, the public opposition to the Games is quite strong. Even though you are vaccinated; you have to carry the records. The Games are just two months away. Recently Japan witnessed a fourth COVID-19 wave. There was a sudden surge in the number of cases. Although this time; youngsters are at high risk. Even the vaccination drive in the country is quite slow.
The Protocols and Restrictions
Foreign spectators are already banned in the Japan Olympics. No overseas fans are allowed this time. However, the decision for Japanese fans is not announced yet. It is still unclear; whether Japanese fans can watch the Games live or not. And if allowed; they will have to follow various precautions. Firstly, a Covid negative certificate is mandatory. Both for the players and the fans. Secondly, if you are vaccinated; you need to show your records. Loud cheering in the stadiums is banned and; viewers cannot high-five each other. The Japanese government is yet to announce more details.
Japan Olympics Gaining Massive Public Criticism
The report has gained severe public outrage. The hosting of the Japan Olympics was highly criticized on Twitter. Several people criticized the country’s decision; of organizing such a big event during a global pandemic. Especially, when cases in Japan are at a peak. The term ‘negative test certificate’; was trending on Twitter in the country. It garnered over 8000 tweets. More than 60% of the people are against organizing the games.
The Government’s Reaction
The Japanese government has not justified anything regarding this issue. Moreover, the country extended the emergency till June 20. The situation is very critical in Japan. However, the Olympics were already canceled once due to the pandemic. But they rescheduled it from July 23-August 8. Although the event will go ahead under strict COVID-19 protocols; officials have not confirmed yet.
