The Application is Following the Government’s PDP Guidelines
Besides Instagram, Facebook and Messenger allow advertisers to show content based on the user’s interest. But this is now going to change for the under 16 audience. However, the application is not going to ask for some sort of parental consent for the teenagers. Instead, they are following what is mentioned in the Indian Government’s Personal Data Protection (PDP) Bill. The bill says that the application should keep away users under 18 from inappropriate content. Henceforth, the Facebook-owned application is going to follow the government’s guidelines.
Experts and Specialists have Opposed the Bill
Social media experts and specialists have opposed the PDP bill. They said that this bill requires a more authentic verification process. And a more authentic verification process will collect more user information. Henceforth, there is no point in implementing this bill on social media platforms. On the other hand, Instagram has agreed to the terms and conditions and decided to make its platform a safer place for the teenage audience.
Private Account for Under 16 Instagram Users
Instagram will make it under 16 users’ accounts private by default. These settings will continue until the user turns 18. However, this new feature is applied only to those users who are new to the application.
