Even in such critical times, corruption is at its peak. Bengaluru police have arrested several people under bed scams. Reportedly, they booked beds in the name of asymptomatic patients. In addition, sold them in black. Here’s everything you need to know.
Bed Scam in Bengaluru Region
Four people, including two doctors, were arrested in Bengaluru on Wednesday. They are arrested for a COVID-19 bed scam overseen by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). In other words, these people first booked beds in the name of COVID-19 patients. However, later on, sold them in black. The Central Crime branch raided eight BBMP’s war room. Currently, they are investigating the matter.
Doctors Involved as Well
Dr. Rehan was in charge of the BBMP South Zone war room. And Dr. Suresh was in charge at the Bommanahalli war room. The latter had tested positive for COVID-19. Both these doctors have been accused in the bed scam case. The duo used to book beds on the name of patients who are home isolated. Later on, they would sell the beds in return for bribes. Tejasvi Surya, Bengaluru South MP stated that the beds were re-allotted at Rs. 40,000.
Beds in Bengaluru Being Sold in Black
Jayanagar police had earlier arrested Netravati, a 40- years old social worker for the same scam. Her nephew, Rohith Kumar (22 years) was also involved in the case. Both of them reside in Begur. They would allegedly re-sell blocked beds for Rs. 20,000-40,000. Besides these two, the Bengaluru city police had arrested three more people.
In fact, these people have approximately extorted Rs 1.2 lakh from a person who needed an ICU bed. Subsequently, the needy paid Rs. 50,000 via Google Pay and the rest by cash. Moreover, the patient did not survive. He was first admitted to a private hospital in Nelamangala. Later on, he was shifted to People Tree Hospital after his condition worsened.
The police and CCB suspect that hospitals too are a part of this scam. In conclusion, the matter is under investigation. Currently, there are 3,13,314 active cases in Bengaluru Urban. Besides that, Karnataka is amongst the worst COVID-19 hit states in India.
