Ek Villain Returns, the sequel to Mohit Suri’s 2014 film, is scheduled to hit theatres on February 11, 2022. The director took to social media to announce the news.
While earlier it was reported that the film will see John Abraham and Aditya Roy Kapur share screen space, it is now announced that Arjun Kapoor has replaced the latter. Tara Sutaria and Disha Patani will be seen playing female leads. The film will feature John and Arjun as villains, not heroes.
Director Mohit Suri today announced on social media that Ek Villain Returns will release on February 11, 2022. The filmmaker wrote, “Hero ki kahaani sab jaante hai.. par villain ki? #EkVillainReturns, 11th Feb, 2022 (sic).”
Mohit Suri is known for films like Half Girlfriend, Aashiqui 2, Murder 2, Zeher, and Kalyug among others. His last directorial Malang, starring Aditya Roy Kapur, Disha Patani, Anil Kapoor, and Kunal Kemmu, was released shortly before the coronavirus-induced lockdown in 2020.
The film reunites Kapoor with Suri, after the duo’s 2017 drama “Half Girlfriend”.
“Ek Villain”, featuring Sidharth Malhotra, Shraddha Kapoor, and Riteish Deshmukh, was a revenge drama about a criminal whose wife is murdered by a sadistic serial killer.
Director’s view on the Ek Villain Franchise
In an earlier interview with Mumbai Mirror, Mohit Suri had said that he was looking to create a whole franchise on villains. About casting new actors for the sequel, he had said, “Shraddha (the leading lady of Aashiqui 2 and Ek Villain), Sidharth and Riteish (Ek Villain co-stars) have been a part of my biggest films and I love them, but this is a different story, with new characters that refer to the older ones.”
“‘Ek Villain’ was my passion project and a labour of love. The kind of love that I still receive for ‘Ek Villain’ overwhelms me. I am sure with ‘Ek Villain Returns’; the love is only going to grow bigger. And while I cannot reveal much about the film, I can assure you that it is going to be a thrilling rollercoaster ride,” the filmmaker said in a statement.
He had said that while Ek Villain was about a conflict between a hero and a villain, Ek Villain Returns will essentially be about two villains. “It is essentially villain versus villain. Both Adi and John are playing negative characters,” he had said when Aditya Roy Kapur was supposed to do the film.
