Researchers and tech experts have pointed out vulnerabilities in the Telegram application. A group of English researchers have highlighted the vulnerabilities in the popular messaging application. The app has become quite popular these days and has over 500 million users worldwide. Experts Highlight Critical Vulnerabilities in Telegram Application A group of experts from London have pointed out some critical vulnerabilities in the Telegram messaging application. The scholars from Royal Holloway, University of London said that there are some vulnerabilities in the app’s cloud chats. Moreover, they have found some susceptibilities in the application’s encryption protocols. After WhatsApp privacy policy controversy, several people shifted to this messaging application. But it seems, there is something critical here as well. The Problem is Now Fixed According to reports, Telegram acknowledged to what the researchers said and fixed the problem. The app launched an update recently and covered the vulnerabilities. Moreover, the messaging platform uses MTProto protocol in order to secure its cloud chats. It is somewhat similar to the Transport Layer Security (TLS). However, TLS is a popular cryptographic standard that is used to ensure data security during its transfer. How did the Researchers Conduct their Study? Researchers said that they attempted four attacks on Telegram to test its security protocol. However, three of them passed the security test. But the last one broke the security protocols and application’s key exchange properties. This led to a MitM attack. Moreover, the study concluded that the platform uses a MTProto protection based on cryptographic techniques. Although, the messages remain between the server and the client, but they aren’t end-to-end encrypted. These chats are referred to as “cloud chats”. Researchers found that the app does offer encryption through a ‘secret chats” feature. But the cloud chats are not end-to-end encrypted. What did Telegram Say Over this Issue? Telegram mentioned in a blog post that they have resolved the issue. Moreover, the latest version of the application provides better security and encryption to the users. Henceforth, the research and the study are no longer valid. Besides that, the app ensured that they are committed towards their user’s safety and privacy. After WhatsApp privacy policy controversy, several people shifted to this application. Therefore, it is very important for the platform to maintain its security standards.
