The new IT rules in India are endangering the future of various social media platforms. With these platforms failing to comply with new rules, there is an expected ban. Tech giants owing Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are under questioning. The Centre introduced new IT rules in February. Big names such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have failed to meet certain deadlines. Government sources revealed that these apps have failed to comply with India’s new social media platform (SMP) rules. Henceforth, the future of these apps has come under a debate. Whether these apps will face a ban in India or not, is a big question. Various arguments are going on regarding this topic. India can face a Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter ban if they fail to meet the government’s standards. The Centre on February 25 released new IT rules for various OTT platforms. Social media platforms were also included in the new guidelines. They are called the Information Technology (Intermediary guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. Meanwhile, the guidelines were released to make SMP more responsible and accountable for their content. In the new guidelines, the platforms were supposed to disclose the originator of any content. Moreover, any flagged content has to get removed within 36 hours. It could relate to India’s sovereignty, state security, rape, or any other sensitive content. Besides that, the platforms had to set up a complaint redressal mechanism. They will appoint an officer in the country to resolve the matter. The Centre gave three months to the platforms for making the necessary changes. So far, they haven’t made any changes in their policies. Apart from Koo App, the Indian Twitter, none has compiled with the rules. Henceforth, it leads to questions on their banning. Several rumors are spread that Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook will get banned in India. They have failed to meet the 3-months deadline. Government sources reveal that these apps have demanded some more time. Some companies say that they can’t take any action until they get orders to do so from their headquarters in the US. So far, there is no confirmation regarding the ban. However, it seems that the Centre is not happy with the delay. It might take some action sooner or later. Let’s see what happens. Stay tuned for further updates.
