What is “Eugenics”?

Eugenics was quite popular during the 20th century in the United States. Some people believed that this practice; was important in order to improve the human race. Besides that, they believed that people with undesirable traits; should not bear babies. Henceforth, they started forcefully sterilizing them. The United States government started this practice, especially in California. People who used to suffer from disabilities; were the victims of this practice. The government used to sterilize people with mental disorders or physical disabilities.

The California State’s Reparation Program

According to reports, over 20,000 people were sterilized until 1979 in the United States. It is true that most of them must have died quite some time ago. Prison Sterilized Women to Get Extra Compensation

California is the third state; to announce reparation programs for the “Eugenics” movement victims. Besides it, Virginia and North Carolina also came forward for the sterilization victims. Along with this compensation, the government will also recompence those women who were sterilized in the prison. However, this practice was quite popular in the 20th century, but it still happens in the modern world. Some cases are as new as the year 2010.

Still Practiced in the Modern World

Over 144 women were sterilized between 2005 to 2013 in California. This implies that the “Eugenics” practice still prevails in the modern world. However, there is no evidence as of the past 4-5 years. But we know that until 2013, this practice was still prevailing. Well, these women had signed the consent form for sterilization. It wasn’t forced.
