The California state government has announced compensation for the victims of “Eugenics”, a sterilization practice. However, the government plans to pay reparations up to $25,000 to these people. This practice was quite popular in the United States during the 1900s. but, later on, this practice was considered inhuman.
California Government to Pay $25K to Sterilization Victims
The government of California is paying reparations to “Eugenics” victims up to $25,000. It is a tribute to those people who have survived the horrific practice through decades. The practice, that was prevalent in the US from 1900-1979 is considered inhuman today. In the practice, the government forcefully sterilized the citizens. According to some reports, some victims include people as young as 13 years of age.
What is “Eugenics”?
Eugenics was quite popular during the 20th century in the United States. Some people believed that this practice; was important in order to improve the human race. Besides that, they believed that people with undesirable traits; should not bear babies. Henceforth, they started forcefully sterilizing them. The United States government started this practice, especially in California. People who used to suffer from disabilities; were the victims of this practice. The government used to sterilize people with mental disorders or physical disabilities.
The California State’s Reparation Program
According to reports, over 20,000 people were sterilized until 1979 in the United States. It is true that most of them must have died quite some time ago. However, those who are alive will avail the benefits scheme of the California state government. The state has set aside $7.5 million for the reparations program, waiting for Governor Newsom’s signature.
Prison Sterilized Women to Get Extra Compensation

Over 144 women were sterilized between 2005 to 2013 in California. This implies that the “Eugenics” practice still prevails in the modern world. However, there is no evidence as of the past 4-5 years. But we know that until 2013, this practice was still prevailing. Well, these women had signed the consent form for sterilization. It wasn’t forced.
