Police arrested the famous journalist, Arnab Goswami, and has taken him under judicial custody for two weeks. Goswami is the founder and editor-of-chief of the controversial Republic TV. Reportedly, the police have arrested him from his Mumbai house in connection to the suicides of an architect and his mother in 2018. Mumbai Police recently reopened the case at the family’s request.
Alibaug Police team picked Goswami up from his Lower Parel house and arrested him under Sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 34 (acts done by persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
Reportedly, the police have charged Goswami with allegedly abetting the suicide of Anvay Naik. Naik, a 53-year old interior designer, and architect had named Mr. Arnab Goswami in a suicide note. Furthermore, there was also claims that Republic TV had not paid him his dues after he designed the channel’s layout.
A police official said, “This (arrest) pertains to the 2018 case of a man and his mother committing suicide. We have evidence (against Goswami)”.
Reportedly, in the suicide note, Naik had named Goswami along with two others, Feroz Shaikh and Nitesh Sarda. The police has also taken Shaikh and Sarda into custody.
His wife Akshata said to reporters that her husband had named Arnab and two others in the suicide note but the police made no arrests.
“Arnab kept saying arrests should be made in the Sushant Singh Rajput suicide case where there was no suicide note. My husband left behind a suicide note naming Arnab and two others but no arrests were made. How is this fair,” Akshata said to reporters.
Arnab Goswami ensured my father didn’t get his dues: Naik’s daughter
Naik’s daughter, Adnya Naik said regarding the note that her father named three people in the note. She also said that her father had worked hard and spent his money, energy, blood, and sweat on that project. Moreover, she said that her father had mentioned a due of ₹ 83 lakhs in his suicide note and Arnab Goswami had made it certain that he didn’t receive his dues.
Reports also suggest that the Naik family received threats and warnings against going to the police. Moreover, the Police closed the case for two years. After Adnya Naik made a new complaint to reopen the case, in May, Maharasthra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh declared the reinvestigation of the case.
Several BJP leaders including Home Minister Amit Shah condemned the arrest and said that “It reminds us of the Emergency”.
Congress and its allies have shamed democracy once again.
Blatant misuse of state power against Republic TV & Arnab Goswami is an attack on individual freedom and the 4th pillar of democracy.
